An encounter with the supernatural; Yuki-Onna
Hidden deep in the snowy mountains of Japan lives a creature as fascinating as it is terrifying: Yuki-Onna, or the Snow Woman. Her skin is white as fresh snow, her eyes deep and mysterious as the darkest ice lake. Her story is hardly known outside Japan, but there people still whisper her name with reverence and awe.
The lost path
Long ago, two loggers, Mosaku and his young apprentice Minokichi, wandered through the snowy forest. The snow swirled gently down at first, but soon the weather changed. Clouds darkened the sky, and an icy wind lashed their faces. With each step, their feet sank deeper into the snow, until their legs became heavy and numb. They finally found an abandoned mountain hut and hurried inside, relieved to have found shelter. Inside, only their breathing and the crackling of a small fire that offered barely any warmth resounded. Tired from their battle against the elements, they quickly fell asleep.
A deadly beauty
Midnight brought a strange silence, in which Minokichi was suddenly startled awake. An icy chill filled the cabin, much colder than before. Peering through his eyelids, he saw a woman who seemed to float above the ground. Her beauty was terrifying, her long black hair falling over her shoulders like waves of ink. She slowly bent over Mosaku and exhaled softly; a cloud of icy vapor left her lips and completely enveloped the older man. Mosaku did not resist; his body stiffened and his breathing stopped abruptly.
Minokichi wanted to scream, but his voice was gone. The woman turned toward him, and her dark eyes bore deep into his. But when she looked at him, she seemed to hesitate.

The silent happiness
Years later, Minokichi met a mysterious young woman named O-Yuki, who appeared out of nowhere in his village. They soon married and had children, happy and loved by the villagers. Yet something enigmatic always lingered around his wife; her skin remained pale as snow, her eyes deep and pensive. Minokichi often felt how her gaze fathomed him, as if she saw a hidden secret in him.
The broken promise
On a freezing winter night, while the storm outside was howling fiercely and the children were asleep, Minokichi could no longer bear the pressure of his secret. By the fireplace, he told O-Yuki about the encounter with the snow woman of his youth, wondering why he had been spared. As he spoke, the temperature in the room seemed to lower and lower, until his breath became visible in the air.
Suddenly, O-Yuki stood up and looked at him with a look full of sadness. “Why did you have to speak?” she asked, her voice trembling. “It was me, Minokichi. I was the one who spared you out of pity and later out of love. But now you have broken our promise and I must leave you.” Her body seemed to fade away, melting with the snow blowing in through the crack of the door, until she was gone.
Philosophical value of legend
The legend of Yuki-Onna teaches us much about the human heart and the delicate nature of trust. Just as snow melts with the first warmth of spring, trust is fragile and easily broken. The snow woman represents both the beauty and danger of the unknown, of secrets better left unspoken.
Inspiration from the story of Yuki-Onna
This ancient legend inspires us to be careful with what we cherish and love. Secrets come with a price, and trust is the most precious gift we can give each other. Like Minokichi, we must learn to balance between respecting the unknown and expressing our deepest emotions.
Because ultimately, like Yuki-Onna, everyone carries secrets that are too fragile to be out in the full light of day. It is up to us to honor, protect and cherish these secrets.
