Filip Poppe grabs Grand Champion ZNA BKS 2023
The Grand Champion of the ZNA Belgian Koi Show is a well-known kohaku. It is a four-step kohaku, also called yondan kohaku. It is much appreciated to have such a nice step pattern on a Koi. A Kohaku obviously has two colors, white and red, which makes it easier to judge, but if there are flaws or little things that are not quite correct, these also stand out.
I don’t think any other fish has ever won so many titles
However, they were not to be found. This fish comes from the Sakai Fish Farm and the bloodline is Magnum. This fish won its tenth Grand Champion title in Europe in Affligem. I don’t think any other fish has ever won so many titles, not in Holland, not in Europe, not in England and not even in Japan. The fish is now 11 years old and is in its 12th year.
In 2016, the hobbyist brought the Kohaku to Germany as a big surprise. She was already the center of admiration there, but did not manage to capture a major trophy; in the same year she did win the Mature Award at the Belgian Koi Show. A year later, she managed to capture the Supreme Champion title in Kalkar. Then she proved unstoppable and with the latest win she has 10 Grand Champion titles; something no other Koi has ever accomplished. The reason this fish won the Grand Champion title is because Belgian hobbyist Filip Poppe is still able to present this fish at this age in this form at the koi show.
So not because there is a lack of competition, but rather an overwhelming field of participants with many great Kohaku, Sanke, Showa, too, that have already won in Japan. And yet Filip Poppe manages to prolong the Grand Champion title with his Kohaku. Why? Because he does manage to bring his fish, not being the biggest, back to the Belgian Koi Show in a more than formidable condition. Pure white, no blemishes in the beni and a magnificent body actually just.
Looking at the body; beautiful, but the body of the other fish in the competition is also impressive. Had this fish been put in a condition of less than 95 percent, it would not have won the title.
There is simply no more to get out of this fish
Body Magnum Kohaku
There is simply no more to get out of this fish. He really makes the most of it. And I’ll say it again, the fish has now been 11 years. The body is more than impressive. The Koi has also been even wider before, but at that time the Koi was just too wide for my personal taste, but now she is just perfectly massive. In doing so, she honors the genes of her grandmother, the true Dynamite Ochiba. This one was a whopping 107cm. Another fish may be bigger and longer and of course that counts, but Miss Magnum is simply in the best shape she can be in and that too counts.
Yondan Kohaku
Yes, it is of course a 4 stepper, something that is actually also very highly regarded by the judges. It is a very balanced pattern, natural and all the sashi and kiwa is simply tight. Where the Kohaku also scores is the odome. The last red pattern, Then are there no errors in it at all? Yep, the fish is not perfect, you’re a very small bit of red pigment loose from the pattern, but then you really have to look and again; the fish is already in its 12th year of life.
It’s indoors and the light is mostly yellow, but you can just see that the white is very good. It’s just excellent. White is not pigment, but flour more the cell structure multiplied by the skin quality, as these together determine the reflection of the skin. Again, it is skin quality that prevails.

Buying versus keeping
Look Filip wins often and you might want to see another winner as a fan, but precisely as a fan you should also be able to appreciate it very much. That he can hold his own in the midst of this field of participants. He shows that it’s not just about buying Koi, but more importantly about keeping koi. He just proves that time and time again and then you can do nothing more or less than take your hat off to that. Yes.I very much want to be very critical, you know that but we are simply dealing here with an extremely stable Koi and a formidable keeping of it by a hobbyist who knows what he is doing.
That it is not a one hit wonder Filip Poppe has also already proven. It is his 16th Grand Champion title overall. Among other things, he won the BKS in 2013 with a Sanke named Sunshine and won two titles with Miss Rose. Another Sanke and a Maruten Kohaku were also good for two titles. With a Showa, Els and Filip never won before. Whether they take that as a silent hint and challenge is up to them. 😉
He shows that it is not just about buying Koi, but more importantly about keeping koi
At this show, winners were based not only on the body type of the fish, but also on the quality of the skin. Although body type is most important in judging, at this show it was the quality of the skin that determined the winners. I checked with the judges and, of course, they say that the complete picture counts and that’s where I want to put the nuance. It has to be right; it’s not just a matter of counting points and as mentioned above; I think the show crowned the best winner with this Koi.
The supreme Champion was a Ginrin Showa from Hilde and Michel, also Belgian hobbyists. In 2019, the same Magnum Kohaku still lost the judges‘ verdict against a Kohaku from the same hobbyists.
Elite Koi from England was visiting and did a report with me to it from the Grand Champion:
