a meter-long SFF Sanke beats all the Kohaku violence
The highest honor has not gone to a Koi that belongs to the variety we call Taisho Sanshoku since around 2003. This year, however, is different and a meter-long SFF Sanke beats all the Kohaku violence of its opponents and manages to bring the variety back to the throne after 20 years. This is the All Japan Grand Champion 2023:

This is the 12th time Sakai Fish Farm has been allowed to pick up the top title from the podium. The breeder has also put sizeable effort into arriving at these Koi. It is the result of many years of labor representing many generations of Koi. This particular Sanges the sixth generation from the Sakura bloodline. The male southern variety is descended from a karashigoi which partly explains the growth and impressive body.
And if you don’t believe that, move your ass to Tokyo to make sure for yourself
The photographer, Johan Leurs, owner of Koi Zanmai, emphatically states that the photos have only been lightly edited to remove the reflection of any lights, but that the Koi really do look true to life as well. “And if you don’t believe that, move your ass to Tokyo to make sure for yourself,” by which Johan himself is also referring to the surreal quality on display at this worldly battleground, the 2023 All Japan Koi Show.
