Bonsai show in Leersum: where living art and Japanese aesthetics come together
Anyone who studies Nishikigoi sooner or later becomes fascinated by the broader Japanese aesthetic. Balance, tranquility, form and time; these are the same principles we see reflected in both koi and bonsai. On Saturday, April 11, that world comes together at the Bonsai Show in Leersum, where more than a hundred bonsai, demonstrations and a market will bring enthusiasts together at Sport- en Cultuurcentrum De Binder.
“Many people only know bonsai from pictures. Here you really see how much craftsmanship and feeling goes into it.”
More than a hundred bonsai as living works of art
During the spring show of Bonsaivereniging Midden-Nederland, the most beautiful creations of its own members are presented. No standard plants, but carefully shaped trees in which years – sometimes decades – of dedication are visible. Every branch, line and movement tells a story of patience, vision and craftsmanship.

For koi enthusiasts, this feels instantly familiar. Like developing a koi, bonsai is not about speed, but timing, observation and the ability to recognize and guide potential.
What is bonsai anyway?
Bonsai is not a specific type of tree, but an ancient Japanese art form. Through pruning, wiring and directing growth, trees are formed into miniature landscapes in a pot. The result is not a diminutive tree, but a concentrated expression of nature and time. At the bonsai show, you can learn all about it.
Judging, competition and audience award
The most beautiful bonsai of the show will be judged by a professional jury and awarded within different categories. In addition, visitors are given the chance to cast their own votes for the audience award. A nice interaction between craftsmanship and experience; something that is also recognizable within the koi world.

Live demonstration: from material to form
One of the highlights of the bonsai show is the live demonstration, where experienced bonsai artists show how a tree is formed. Step by step, they take visitors through the creative process of pruning and wiring. What begins as basic material visibly develops into a tree with character and direction.
It is exactly that process – seeing form emerge – that is also so intriguing within the koi hobby.
A market for enthusiasts and beginners
In addition to the exhibition, an extensive bonsai market will be present. Here you can find (pre-)bonsai, pots, tools, wire, substrate and everything needed to get started yourself. For beginners, it is a low-threshold way to get acquainted with the hobby, while advanced growers can search specifically for materials or depth. KoiQuestion will also be present at this show to report in words and pictures. I have heard in the corridors from KoiQuestion producer Joe Wouters, that someone is still looking for a bonsai and that we may follow him in his educational quest. Cool!

Why this is of interest to koi enthusiasts
The connection between bonsai and koi goes beyond Japanese origins. Both worlds revolve around creating balance between nature and human intervention. Where koi develop in water, bonsai does so in form and structure. But the underlying philosophy is the same: guiding growth without losing its essence.
For those who want to delve further into that Japanese approach to aesthetics and development, this bonsai show offers an inspiring insight.
